Fertilizer Application: The Right Place, The Right Time

The Right Place

Placing nutrients just to the side and slightly below the seed puts them on target to intercept emerging roots (see Figure A). When roots hit that zone, there is a growth explosion. As more roots develop, they also encounter the fertilizer for an ongoing boost during critical growth stages; almost half of a corn plant’s roots are within 12” of the soil surface during tasseling. This means that your precision-placed fertilizer keeps working through the growth life of the plant (see Figure B).

The Right Time

True precision nutrient placement equipment lets you hit the root zone regardless of tillage practice and regardless of when fertilizer is applied—pre- or post-emergence, striptill, mid-row banding, or side dress. Look to Yetter for the product that’s right for your operation.

Successful Solutions

Stan and Don Grigg of Toulon, Illinois, use Yetter coulter/residue manager combinations on their planters. According to Stan, “The combo works great in all conditions. It's so easy to go from lock down to float mode, and I love being able to disengage and raise up the Titans™ when they are not needed.”
